New Year’s Resolutions! Here we go . . . again.
This year, I recommend an alternative.
Years ago, I heard this cryptic advice. “Don’t just do something, stand there.” Here is my simple, practical interpretation. When we “do something,” we focus on taking action in the world. When we “stand there,” we turn our attention inward to thoughts, emotions, and beliefs. If you believe as I do that change happens from the inside out, the way to make the most of this New Year is to not take action, but rather to change internal thoughts, emotions, and beliefs.
Henry Ford said, “Whether you believe you can, or you can’t, you are right." Believe you are unworthy of earning more money, and you probably won’t. Believe you deserve to have a loving partner, and you probably will.
Beliefs are learned through repeated messages. The way to change your beliefs is to change the messages you continually receive. Become the gatekeeper. Eliminate negative messages. Be careful what you read and watch on TV. Hang around people who believe in you and support you. And pay special attention to your “self talk.”
Instead of making New Year’s resolutions to take actions, create new beliefs. Getting emotional will empower those beliefs! Manage your beliefs as if your life depended on it. The quality of your life most certainly does.
