Over the years, you’ve experienced great pleasure, extreme pain, and everything in between.
Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. That’s life. Count on it. When you invest your well-being on the scoreboard of circumstances, you set yourself up for an uncertain, bumpy ride.
About 2000 years ago, a Greek philosopher named Epictetus offered a way to reclaim your power to be happy without giving that power away to circumstances.
He said, “People are not disturbed by things, but by the view they take of them.” What if upset and worry are not caused by circumstances, but are simply points of view? An alternative point of view is gratitude.
In any situation, you can always find reasons to be grateful. If you are blessed with hearing and sight, with a long-time friend, with lack of hunger, with lessons to learn, (and on and on), be grateful.
Upset and gratitude cannot co-exist. Whenever you find yourself within the confines of a struggle, if you open the door, gratitude is always there. Smiling. Wagging its tail. Waiting to be let in.
Choosing gratitude is a continual practice. It’s worth the effort. The result is a life in which you will escape from the prison of being a victim of circumstances. Fully enjoy life’s gifts and ride out the bad times with grace and gratitude.
